One of Europe's most versatile choral ensembles, Ex Cathedra brings its distinctive sound, historically-informed approach and performance excellence to music from the Renaissance to the present day, through:
- Concerts, broadcasts and recordings
- Innovative & attractive programming backed by thorough musicological research
- Uncovering neglected composers and hitherto unknown masterpieces
- Performing both a cappella and with its own period-instrument orchestra
- Commissioning choral works from new and established composers
The original Ex Cathedra choir was founded in 1969 by Jeffrey Skidmore to develop a choral ensemble of outstanding quality and a focus for historically-informed performance practice, based in his home city of Birmingham. Ex Cathedra is now widely acknowledged as one of the top choirs in the UK, with a growing international reputation for its trailblazing performances of Early Music.
But Ex Cathedra is now much more than a choral ensemble. It is, in fact, a unique musical resource embracing a specialist chamber choir, a vocal consort and a period-instrument orchestra (leader Micaela Comberti) as well as a youth training choir and an extensive education programme aimed at identifying and encouraging the singers and audiences of the future.
In addition to its own concert series in Birmingham and London, Ex Cathedra has performed in a number of prestigious festivals across Europe. These include the BBC Proms, the Lufthansa Baroque Festival, London, the York Early Music Festival, the Lourdes International Festival of Sacred Music, the Bruges Early Music Festival and festivals in Italy, Finland and Israel.
