Practical work is supported by a sound theoretical and historical programme, and students are encouraged to adopt a broad and enquiring approach to their studies.

A variety of courses are taught at Birmingham Conservatoire: The Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree course has been designed for the student of Western classical music who seeks an exciting and challenging programme of practical study which is supported by academic work approached in a stimulating and innovative way; The Postgraduate Diploma in Music (PGDip) and Master of Arts in Music (MA) can be studied Full-time in 1 year or Part-time over 2 years and are designed for recent graduates, or for mature students who are equipped for postgraduate study. The courses provide both further experience as preparation for the Conservatoire's Diploma in Professional Studies or research degrees, and suitable postgraduate qualifications for career purposes.

Birmingham Conservatoire's Commitment to Early Music takes the form of giving all under-graduates and post-graduates the opportunity to study with one of the Conservatoire's many early music specialists. A large collection of 16th, 17th and 18th century instruments - wind, strings, brass and keyboard - is available for students' use.
